Should You Use ChatGPT For Cover Letters?

The debate about using AI for cover letters when job hunting is heating up.

On the plus side, AI will save you time, tackle writer’s block, and produce polished, keyword-rich drafts to help you get past those applicant-tracking systems. Handy, right?

But there’s a downside. Relying too much on AI can make your letters feel bland and prevent you from showing off your unique personality. Some employers are also wary, questioning the authenticity of AI-generated content.

The sweet spot? Use AI as a starting point, then add your personal touch. A mix of intelligent tech and your individuality will give you the edge. Let's explore how to get the balance right.

Why Personalising Your Cover Letter Matters

First things first - your cover letter needs to represent you. Employers are interested in hiring you, and if your cover letter represents a standard AI-generated cover letter, how will they get to know who you are?

Your cover letter is an opportunity to showcase your individuality and enthusiasm for the job you are applying for. When done right, it’s a chance to connect with potential employers and make a memorable impression. Here’s why personalising a cover letter is vital:

It Reflects Who You Are
A well-written cover letter introduces the real you. Employers want to understand your personality and motivations and what makes you the right fit for the job or graduate programme.

It Helps You Shine
Many graduate CVs can look similar, especially with limited experience. Your cover letter is where you can bring your story to life and highlight the unique attributes and strengths you uniquely bring to the table.

It Exhibits Authenticity and Consistency
A personalised cover letter aligns seamlessly with your CV and overall communication style. This consistency reassures recruiters that your application is authentic and thoughtfully prepared.

It Demonstrates Genuine Interest
Recruiters and employers can tell when you’ve put effort into crafting your application. A personalised cover letter shows you’re genuinely excited about the job or opportunity and committed to making an impact.

A Common Way That AI is Used for Cover Letter Writing

When using AI to craft your cover letter, many people start by inputting their CV and simply asking, “Write a cover letter.” Some may go further, adding the job specification and asking for alignment. While this approach can be a helpful starting point, it often results in a generic draft that looks all too familiar to employers and recruiters.

This is a generic example recruiters see too often:

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

I am excited to apply for the Investment Graduate position at [Company Name]. As a Bachelor of Commerce graduate specialising in Accounting, with strong Grade 12 mathematics results, I am eager to contribute my organisational and analytical skills to your financial services team.

During my internship at [Company Name], I gained experience in preparing financial reports, managing client documentation, and using tools like [specific tools]. I excelled in collating sensitive data, maintaining compliance, and managing client communications effectively.

My proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and my ability to work proactively make me well-suited for tasks like managing EFT payments, preparing client packs, and coordinating events. I am especially drawn to [Company Name]’s commitment to client trust and compliance, and I look forward to bringing my skills and enthusiasm to your team.

Yours sincerely,
[Your Full Name]

Does it look familiar to you, too?

How to Personalise the Generic Cover Letter Written by AI

  • “Dear…” and “Yours sincerely”: Do you naturally address people this way? If you do, then that is fine. But do you? Or would you instead address people in emails as Dear Sir, Hi, Hello, and Good Day?
  • “I am eager to contribute”: Changing a word like ‘eager’ will help make your cover letter less generic. PS You can ask AI for alternatives to this phrase.
  • “Specialisation in Accounting”: Okay, this one is nice. Please include your specialisation, field of study, or major in the cover letter.
  • “utilising software like [relevant software/tools, e.g., Excel, QuickBooks, or CRM systems]”: For the love of oranges, do not use the suggested tools from AI. Input the tools you have used and are proficient in.
  • “Attention to Detail”: This soft skill is mentioned on 90% of all job specs (do not quote us on the stats), and it is great to highlight in your cover letter. But simply copying and pasting this phrase into your cover letter won’t effectively demonstrate your skill. Instead, consider a specific example from your experience where you showcased attention to detail and incorporate that into your cover letter to make it more personal and convincing.

AI tools like ChatGPT help organise your thoughts, but it’s crucial to customise the result. Adding specific details about your accomplishments, the tools you’ve genuinely used, and examples of how you’ve demonstrated essential skills will transform a generic draft cover letter into a cover letter that’s personally about you and grab a recruiter’s attention.
